Part of the enjoyment
of a motorcycle is the way that bikes can be made into
an expression of yourself. For many bikers, the choices
provided by the motorcycle manufacturers just don’t
provide enough variety to match the personalities of the
riders. For this reason, many riders customize their bikes
or hire customizers to do the work for them.
Customizing your bike can be as simple as adding some
nice leather saddlebags, or it can turn into a major obsession,
running the gamut from…
- SIMPLE, do-it-yourself projects like accessorizing
your bike with a new seat, saddle bag, mirrors, grips,
headlight, gauges, tires, etc.
… to
- EYE-CATCHING, like adding elaborate custom paint
jobs and chrome plating – particularly on gas
tanks and fenders,
… to
- MAJOR RECONSTRUCTIVE SURGERY, changing the overall
look of your bike by modifying the suspension, extending
the front folk, replacing stock parts with custom
built tanks, fenders, handlebars, exhausts, etc.
A really tricked out custom bike can easily cost
twice the selling price of the original.
Today, customizing has become so popular that it’s
easy to find custom bike shows throughout the country,
in fact throughout the world; the biggest shows attracting
huge crowds of enthusiastic bikers. The popularity of
these shows has advanced motorcycle sales (especially
for cruisers), given new validation to custom-bike enthusiasts,
and even driven the style of production bikes.
If you’d like to have a little work done on your
bike, check with your local motorcycle dealer or mechanic
for recommendations, or go online and do a search for
“custom bike builders” or “custom bike
painters”. Or better yet, if you see another custom
bike that you really like, stop and ask the rider about
the work. They’re usually extremely proud of their
bikes and more than happy to talk about them.
